The recommeneded time for spaying and neutering is around 6 months of age. In male dogs, this can help to avoid unwanted behavior like spraying(territory marking). In female dogs it can minimize the chance of mammary gland tumors and pyometra. As a male dog ages there are several tumors related with the male hormone such as prostate gland tumors and peri-anal adenocarcinoma. In dogs with cryptorchid the testicle is still inside the abdominall cavity and can easily turn into a tumor if not removed.

建議在狗狗六個月大時進行結紮手術。對公狗兒言，可避免尿尿做記號之行為，母狗則可將罹患乳房腫瘤及子宮蓄膿症的機率降到最低。隨著公狗年紀漸長，也有好幾種腫瘤與雄性荷爾蒙有關，例如攝護腺腫瘤、肛門旁的腺狀惡性腫瘤。有隱睪症的狗狗如果未動手術移除睪丸，也容易演變成腫瘤。
